Nadia takes a rest before continuing the climbing of the Pirámide
de Kukulcán also called Templo the Kukulcán, or Ell Castillo (that last name
was given by the Spaniards)
View from the top of the pyramid on the Templo the los
Guerreros, the temple of the warriors.
Caution is taken on top of the pyramid.
Once again the temple of the warriors with its Mil Columnas.
(the 1000 pillars)
Of the 4 sides of the pyramid there have been restored 2.
The other 2 have been let be such as them found.
We see here, at the left, the restored side and at the right the raw
site.
Pyramid Kukulcán from the corner.
Iglesia
Belongs to the old part of
Chichén Itzá. We see
clearly the Puuc style. Nosy (Chac) god masks and friezes (decorated
edges.)
Graves of the high priests.
El Caracol.
(caracol = snail. Building has the form of a snail)
Supposedly this was an observatory. It is one of the few round
buildings in the Maya-area. The windows in the elevated building were used
for astronomic perceptions. Here you can observe some points in the orbits
of the Sun, Moon and Venus.
The stairs of the pyramid with on the background the ball
game field.
In the inner-site of the pyramid archaeologists discovered an
older building. In this well preserved temple they found a CHAC-MOOL and a
red painted throne in the form of a jaguar.
By means of a very steep and narrow staircase we go to this spot,
approximately ending up in the middle of the pyramid.
Chak Mo’ol.
It is a human figure which leans backward on its elbows
and lie with bowed knees on the ground. The head facing to one side. In the
middle he holds a dish in which the harts of the ceremonial human sacrifices
were placed.
The Chak Mo'ol mediated between people and gods.
These Chak Mo'ol is still original and is situated in
the heart of the pyramid.
See here the red-painted throne in the shape of a jaguar.
The eyes and dots of the jaguar exist of disks of jade.
Original!!!
Have a rest after that straining excursion to the top of the
pyramid, even 2 times, and to the inside of the pyramid.
Especially the last one was heavy. It was there warm and very moistly...
But... we survived.
In the evening we see the beautiful lightshow in Chichén
Itzá.
Large speakers were put on the lawn from which was given us the Spanish
explanation concerning the history. Through IR-headphones we also could hear
it in English.
