The sober renaissance facade of the cathedral of Mérida.
Construction started in 1561 with which the church is the
oldest cathedral of the American mainland.

The Zócalo of Mérida. In a previous life Mérida was one of the most important ceremonial cities of Maya-world. It was called T'ho. There is however not much left that reminds us of that time. By the very profitable henequen (sisal) cultivation, Merida produced around 1900 more millionaires by head of the population then any other city in Mexico. These rich people built fabulous houses in Merida but spent much of their time in Paris or New York. In contrast to Tenochtitlán, which was conquered in 4 months, T'ho resisted the Spaniards for 15 years. Firstly the resolute Maya's had to deal with Fransisco Montejo, later with its son, who conquered them finally in 1542.

Palacio del Gobierno.

Here 27 wall paintings give us an alarming picture of the history of Yucatán.

Left the battle between day and night that is a topic in the Maya-culture.

The destruction of Maya-culture by the Spaniards.

Casa de Montejo.
It is now a bank building, but in former days this was the house of Fransisco de Montejo, and later his relatives. We see the family weapon above the balcony. On the facade 2 conquistadores which stands on the heads of the defeated Indians, have been represented.

Detail of the "defeated Indians"

Sisal

Sisal rope is made of the fibers of several types' aloe and Agaves.

Here we see a Sisal factory in the region around Merida with on the forefront the leafs of the plant.

The fibers which have been taken away from the leafs.

Making a rope is rather simple. You take some fibers and roll them together. Voilá, you already have a small rope.

Colorful cemetery somewhere underway of  Mérida to Chichén Itzá.

This man maintenance this cemetery for almost 40 years. He paints the graves, puts texts on it and clears the graves if it is necessary.
