On the way to Campeche we deviate from our route and set off to the little village Sabancuy, situated at the Gulf of Mexico. Here we have time to relax and to enjoy the water.
In Sabancuy there is almost no tourism. There is small restaurant at the beach.

The water is nice, lovely temperature. It swarms there however of suck-fishes, that swims to your legs, sucks on your leg for a short moment and then let go again. In former days a medicinal functioning was granted to.
Also we see jump-fishes in the water, who sometimes jump with 5 or 6 together out of the water, and jump against us.
Here I try there to photograph some fishes.. Unfortunately... to quick...

On the beach are some beautiful and big shells. A search of 10 minutes provides us already some nice shells. We take a couple to take home.
Below one on "real" scale...

Thunderclouds are gathering.

It gets worse, but fortunately it blows over.

After a good lunch and a nice swum we continue our journey to Campeche.

¡ VÁMONOS!

Campeche

It has been founded in 1540. It became an important harbour for the transport of gold and silver to Spain. This wealth did not escape the pirate gangs and the city has been regularly besieged almost for 2 centuries, where sometimes was made a complete slaughter, houses burned, citizens robbed and women raped.

Just after 1686 measures were taken. The city was walled entirely and after also 2 forts had been built, it was finally done with the attacks of the pirates.

See the splendour of the coloured houses!

To put an end to the piracy the city was walled and forts were built.

A part of the fort.

Fort with guns.

De Catedral de la Concepción, build between 1650 and 1850.

In front lies the plaza principal.

In Campeche it is warm and moistly but it feels good.
In the evening we have eaten outside deliciously in the village.
