Palenque
Palenque is surrounded by the jungle. This Maya-city date from 300-900 A.D. hereafter it became abandoned for unknown reasons. The complex exists of several temples/pyramids, palaces and an astronomic sun tower. It has been built on a natural terrace above the outer marches of the Río Usumacinta, and it was a field of trade between several regions. The river transported except trade products also knowledge and ideas.
Under the rulers such as Pakal the great and his son, Kan Balam, Palenque became an important Maya-kingdom.

It is here WARM and MOIST.

We see the "Templo de las Inscripciones". In fact it's a temple on the top of a pyramid. The temple has been named after the hieroglyphic inscriptions on the walls, on which is indicated also the date 692 AD. In 1952 they discovered a sealed stone entrance which led to a 25m a deeper lain sepulchral chamber in the heart of the pyramid. In the tomb they found a skeleton of king PAKAL, who carried a dead mask of inlayed gold and jade-stone. Unfortunately nowadays the temple has been closed.

Templo XIII. In XIII one has found at the base a tomb of the red queen. Here we enter the way to it.

Palacio.

A building complex with inner court, passages and tunnels and a tower with 4 floors. One thinks that the tower was used as an observatory. The walls of the palace have been decorated with very detailed panels in plaster work, stones statues and hieroglyphs. See photo below.

Souvenir, bought here. See table mats on left picture. It is a drawing on the lid of the sarcophagus of PAKAL

The Heliconia flower.

Under and above:
Temples and pyramids which lie deeply in the jungle and where one has still no money to expose them. See this pyramid. Covered under trees and shrubs. What we see in Palenque is only  4 % of what is still there under the jungle.

Templo del SOL.

Right:
Templo de la Cruz foliada, with the "keyholes"...

Overview of Templo del sol, palacio and templo de la cruz.

Templo del Sol

Templo de la cruz.

A pyramid with 9 levels, a magical number, because it returns everywhere at the Maya's, and represents the 9 (under) worlds. On the pyramid stands a temple where a roof peak stands up.

Grupo Norte. These temples are built just before the city fall down.

Buildings in the jungle.

And on the way back again..
