The Zócalo of Oaxaca.
Oaxaca was founded in 1529 nearby an Indian settlement. It counts a half million inhabitants and lies on an altitude of 1500 meters. It has thereby a lovely mild climate; never too warm or too cold.

Oaxaca is especially famous for its markets, and... Grasshoppers!!!!...

Vicky buys a couple to taste. They taste very salt and spicy. You can buy them ground or as a whole.
Here we enter the covered market "Mercado Benito Juárez"

Left: A little boy earns some money by playing on his accordion. In the evening we go to the Zócalo to eat something Meanwhile we enjoy the music of a band.

Objects in Museo Regional. There are Mixtecs jewels, and other objects of, gold, turquoise, obsidian, and glass. All these pieces, which date of around 500, were found in tomb 7, in the ruin city Monte Albán.. The museum contains also a library with more than 20.000 old books. In 10 former convent cells we can form a picture of the culture of the region from the prehistory to after the Revolution.

Portaincensario cilíndrico templo de la cruz foliada.

What we see here are tools to set a brand upon the Indians (above), and CHAC-MOOL (under)

To the right:
The magnificent baroque altar of the Iglesia de Santo Domingo.

Left: De Iglesia de Santo Domingo de Guzmán.
The most beautiful church of Oaxaca.

A brilliant ceiling in this church.

Traditional regional dances of Oaxaca and surroundings which we saw and enjoyed  in the evening in "La casa de cantera"

Oaxaca rain.
Our holiday lasted from 15-7 till 30-7, in the middle of in the rain season therefore. This meant for us that it started to rain frequently at noon. Sometimes for a short time (15 min.) sometimes, however, 2 hours.

Here it just starts to rain, and the salesmen wrap up their merchandise in plastic...
